Yesterday, I cast Hailee Steinfeld and young Harrison Ford as Mary and Joseph. Today I’m casting Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah.
Barbara Striesand as Elizabeth
Elizabeth was barren and well advanced in years. She followed the Lord and walked blameless before Him (Luke 1:5-7). When she found herself pregnant, she hid herself for five months (Luke 1:24-25). Mary came to visit her and the baby in her womb leaped when he heard Mary’s voice. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, realized that Mary was carrying the Lord (Luke 1:41-45).
Barbara is a lovable lady who has played her fair share of great mothers. She was Ben Stiller’s mother in Meet the Fockers, and Seth Rogen’s mother in Guilt Trip. I think her warmth matches that of Elizabeth.
Dick van Dyke as Zechariah
Zechariah was a priest. He was burning incense in the temple of the Lord and was visited by Gabriel, an angel, who told him that God had heard his prayers and that his wife would give birth to a son (Luke 1:8-17). Zechariah didn’t believe this crazy thing, and because of his doubt, Gabriel made him mute until after the baby was born (Luke 1:18-22).
I think Dick van Dyke is perfect for the role. He’s an elder, and Zechariah was a lovable person. Everyone rejoiced when they heard that Zechariah and Elizabeth had a child (Luke 1:57-66). Everyone loves Dick van Dyke.
Tomorrow’s casting call is for Gabriel.
